The Arts & Crafts furniture style (also known as Mission, Stickley,
or Craftsman furniture) dates from around the turn of the century,
and is characterized by a return to the ideal of quality, handcrafted
workmanship and simple, honest design.
The style was born of a social reform movement that emphasized
the pride and dignity of the individual worker in contrast to the
assembly line factory system of the day.
Simple Craftsmanship
Arts and Crafts designers like Gustav Stickley, Harvey Ellis and
Greene & Greene favored clean, simple lines, exposed joinery
and excellent hand craftsmanship. Hallmarks of the style include:
- Through tenons with wood pegs
- Slats and spindles
- Simple geometric lines with no carving or applied ornamentation
- Hand hammered copper hardware.
Pieces were most often executed in quartersawn white oak with a
rich, dark finish.
Versatile Style
Arts and Crafts design is at home in period or contemporary decor,
and its simplicity, versatility and honesty of design and craftsmanship
is at the heart of its popularity today.
