In The Old Days

In the Old Days furniture was built by hand, one piece at a time by skilled craftsmen. It’s these highly trained and experienced employees that make our furniture what it is. These are a few of the people that are behind the beautiful work you see on these pages of our web site.

Tom Dyksen - Craftsman

Tom Dyksen grew up "messing around" in his dad's workshop. His creative interests developed further when he took technical courses at the college level, specializing in woodworking, to sharpen his skills. Tom enjoys building furniture in a variety of styles.

Growing up with three siblings in New Jersey, Tom developed many hobbies that he still enjoys today. These include hockey, soccer, and basketball.

Tim Haarer - Craftsman

Tim grew up in Michigan and now lives in Goshen with his wife and children. In high school, Tim took wood shop classes and later built church furniture for a number of years. He came to SHC in 1980, beginning as an apprentice with his father Sam. Tim's specialty is tables. He has made over 500 unique dining and occasional tables in his years at SHC.

One can hear Tim singing while he works. He plays guitar and is involved with music at church and in other settings.

Maynard Kurtz - Craftsman

Maynard has worked much of his adult life with the Mennonite Church in Africa. In 1989, he joined SHC where he has since learned a variety of woodworking skills. Working as an integral part of our Prairie furniture division, Maynard receives a sense of satisfaction from his work because "so much of our society is 'throw away' and the enduring nature of our furniture stands in contrast to that."

Maynard enjoys traveling and cooking. He regularly shares international dishes at the company potlucks. Being a grandparent is a role he has found a lot of enjoyment in recent years.

Glenn Leinbach - Custom Furniture Shop Mgr., Craftsman

Prior to joining SHC in 1998, Glenn had more than 20 years of experience in framing, interior carpentry, cabinetry and building various styles of furniture. He receives satisfaction from "unlocking the beauty God has created in the wood."

His hobbies include reading, golf, gardening, and building custom clocks. Church and related activities are important for Glenn and his wife, Vera. They have two adult daughters and enjoy spending time with extended family. "Having lived in Colorado for 22 years, I miss the views that come with the "Rocky Mountains."

Stan Shetler - Craftsman

Stan was one of SHC's first employees. His contributions have helped shape the development of the company. Stan's years of experience make him adept at complicated projects and provide a wealth of knowledge that he passes on to new craftsmen. He possesses a valuable talent for coordinating large projects and figuring out the best way to build a piece.

Together with his wife, Stan enjoys biking and canoeing. They like to travel and camp in their 5th wheel travel trailer. One of Stan's prize accomplishments was building an 18' cedar strip canoe.

Arlie Stadler - Finish Craftswoman
